Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful answers about wine river cruises, from choosing an itinerary and preparing for departure to dining, excursions, and life on board.

Everything you need to know before you sail

Browse by topic below. Because inclusions and policies can vary by destination and departure, our wine cruise specialists will confirm the details for your specific journey.

Planning Your Wine Cruise

What is a wine river cruise?

A wine river cruise combines the relaxed pace of river cruising with opportunities to discover regional wines. Depending on the sailing, experiences may include vineyard visits, guided tastings, food-and-wine pairings, presentations from wine experts, and special events hosted by a featured winery or wine personality.

How do I choose the right itinerary?

Start with the wine regions, countries, and travel dates that interest you most. Bordeaux and the Douro emphasize celebrated wine country, while Rhine, Moselle, Rhône, and Danube itineraries combine wine experiences with historic towns and cultural landmarks. We can compare ships, dates, hosts, and available staterooms for you.

What is generally included in an AmaWaterways river cruise fare?

Typical inclusions are your stateroom, onboard dining, wine and beer with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, a professional Cruise Manager, and a selection of guided shore excursions. Some optional experiences or select excursions may cost extra, so we will verify the exact inclusions for your sailing.

Will I have free time to explore on my own?

Yes. Itineraries generally include time to visit a café, browse a market, shop, or simply stroll through town independently. Your Cruise Manager and local guides can suggest places that fit your interests and the time available in port.

What happens if river levels affect the itinerary?

River conditions are monitored closely. When unusually high or low water affects navigation, the cruise line may adjust docking locations, modify excursions, arrange transportation, or coordinate a ship swap. The goal is to preserve as much of the planned experience as conditions safely allow.

Wine, Food & Dining

Are meals and beverages included on board?

All onboard meals are included. Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks are typically served with lunch and dinner, and European sailings generally feature a pre-dinner Sip & Sail cocktail hour. Coffee, tea, and bottled water are available throughout the day; premium beverages may be purchased separately.

What kind of food is served?

Menus blend familiar favorites with dishes inspired by the destinations along the river. Expect thoughtfully prepared breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, with regional ingredients and opportunities to taste local specialties.

Can dietary restrictions or food allergies be accommodated?

Most common dietary requests—including vegetarian and gluten-free preferences—can usually be accommodated when the cruise line is notified in advance. Preparation limitations mean some requests, including kosher meals, may not be available. Tell us about allergies or dietary needs before final payment so they can be documented.

Do I need to be a wine expert to enjoy a wine cruise?

Not at all. Tastings and presentations are designed to be welcoming whether you are a longtime collector or simply curious. Participation is optional, and the itinerary still offers culture, scenery, dining, and excursions for guests who do not drink wine.

Are wine tastings and special wine events included?

Many hosted wine events and standard shore excursions are included, but the program differs by sailing. We will review the host schedule and clearly identify any optional experiences before you book.

Before You Go

What should I pack, and what is the dress code?

Daytime dress is comfortable and casual. Pack good walking shoes, light layers, rain protection, and something a little dressier for welcome or farewell dinners. For warmer destinations, breathable fabrics and sun protection are useful; modest clothing may be required for churches, temples, and other sacred sites.

Do I need a power adapter or voltage converter?

AmaWaterways ships use 220-volt electricity with two-pin outlets. Many modern electronics accept dual voltage, but you may still need a plug adapter; check each device before travel. Certain personal heating appliances may be prohibited for safety reasons.

What time are embarkation and disembarkation?

For Europe, embarkation generally begins around 3:00 p.m. and official disembarkation is usually by 9:00 a.m. Times vary by destination, water conditions, transfers, and itinerary. Your final travel documents will provide the schedule for your specific cruise.

Should I provide independent flight and hotel details?

Yes. Even if you arrange flights or hotels independently, sharing your schedule helps the travel team note your arrival plans and advise you about transfers, embarkation timing, and potential disruptions.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Contact the airline first to arrange the fastest alternative, then notify the emergency contact listed in your travel documents and your travel advisor. Keep receipts and written records in case your travel insurance provides reimbursement.

Booking & Payments

How do I request a quote or reserve a stateroom?

Use our quote form or contact a WineCruise specialist. We will confirm current pricing, promotions, stateroom availability, deposit requirements, and the host program before you make a commitment.

Are shore excursions included?

A choice of guided excursions is included on most AmaWaterways itineraries, often with different walking or activity levels. Select specialty excursions may carry an additional charge. Availability and sign-up timing vary by sailing.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellation charges depend on the booking components and how close the cancellation occurs to departure. Air, land packages, promotions, and special group arrangements may have separate terms. Review the written terms supplied with your quote before paying a deposit.

Should I purchase travel protection?

Travel protection is strongly recommended because a river cruise involves international travel, prepaid arrangements, and potential medical or interruption costs. Compare coverage for cancellation, delay, medical care, evacuation, and pre-existing conditions before purchasing.

How do gratuities work?

Gratuities are discretionary, and destination-specific guidelines are supplied in the pre-cruise information. Prepayment may be available for the cruise and certain land packages. We can provide the current guidance for your itinerary.

Ships & Onboard Experience

Is Wi-Fi available on the ship?

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available aboard AmaWaterways ships. Service quality can vary as the ship travels through locks, rural areas, and different countries, so connectivity may occasionally be slower or interrupted.

Are bicycles available?

Most AmaWaterways ships in Europe, except those in Portugal, carry complimentary bicycles and helmets for use when docked. Guided cycling excursions are offered on many sailings. Availability is limited, and bicycle use is at the guest’s own risk.

Is laundry service available?

Many ships offer paid laundry service, but facilities and turnaround times vary. Self-service laundry is generally not available, so pack accordingly and check the onboard price list after embarkation.

What language is spoken on board?

English is the primary language used for announcements, menus, daily programs, and guided services on AmaWaterways cruises marketed to North American travelers.

What forms of payment are accepted on board?

Accepted currencies and cards differ by region. European onboard accounts are generally settled in euros by cash or major credit card. Other destinations may use U.S. dollars or local currency. Your final documents will list the accepted payment methods for your ship.

Health, Safety & Accessibility

Are medical facilities available on board?

River ships do not carry onboard medical facilities or medical staff. If assistance is required, the crew can contact services ashore; response time depends on the ship’s location. Comprehensive travel insurance with overseas medical and evacuation coverage is strongly encouraged.

Do the ships have elevators?

Most AmaWaterways ships have an elevator serving the main passenger decks, but elevators do not reach the Sun Deck. Several ships and destinations are exceptions. Riverbanks, gangways, double-docking, and cobblestone streets can still present mobility challenges even when a ship has an elevator.

Can travelers with limited mobility participate?

Possibly, depending on the itinerary and level of assistance required. River cruising can involve stairs, uneven surfaces, sloped gangways, and walking through another ship when vessels are double-docked. Contact us before booking so we can discuss the ship, excursions, and realistic requirements.

Is smoking permitted?

Smoking is not permitted in staterooms or indoor public areas. Where allowed, it is limited to a designated outdoor area. Policies may include cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and electronic smoking devices.
